Jusi

The Jusi ( 672.8 m above sea level. NHN ), also Jusiberg or Jusenberg, is a mountain south of Kohlberg in the district of Esslingen in Baden- Württemberg. It is the largest volcanic vent of the Swabian volcano. It marks the end of a narrow, nearly 4 km long mountain ridge, which is connected to the plateau of the Swabian Alb.

Due to its limited forest of juniper heath and the east adjoining Hoernle (707 m above sea level. NHN ), which served as a quarry for a long time and is plotted on the north side about halfway, the Jusi is one of the most striking elevations in the area of Albtrauf. The limestone of the Hoernle (also called " Dettinger Hornle " ) was associated with a cable car to Neuffen, was then transported to the Tälesbahn to Nürtingen. There he was employed in the cement plant for cement production.

The north slope with calcareous grassland, which is used for sheep grazing, as well as the surrounding beech and oak forests, which provide habitat for several rare plant and animal species were in 1935 declared a nature reserve since 1992 they are protected. The former quarry of the " Hornle " is a nature reserve. In the blocked off by a fence area, for example, come before the endangered Yellow-bellied toads.

From basalt massif of Jusi you on a clear day a view of the northern Black Forest with the Hornisgrinde, the beautiful book and the Fildern, the Neckar valley, on the Swabian Forest and the Hohenstaufen, Rechenberg and Stuifen (Kaiser mountains ) with the adjacent Cold box.

The origin of the name Jusi is unclear. There are several attempts at interpretation: Possibly the name belongs to the testimonies of Celtic or pre-Celtic names such as the names of rivers Neckar, Erin's, Fils, among others, since the Jusiberg is a landmark visible from afar, he could already have been named early with the later transfer to new immigrants. Another theory he could be derived for " right " from the Latin word ius, which could indicate a former special legal status of the mountain. It is - without a source - claims the Jusi have shown over the centuries the boundary between the different dominions to Nürtingen and Reutlingen, although located around the Jusi including the mountain itself altwürttembergisches area (in the range of offices Nürtingen, Neuffen and Urach ). It would also be more than unusual that only here the Latin word " jus " has = right led to a geographical name for a border, because documentation of similar name, there is not - despite the multitude of historic boundaries, especially in West Germany ( where usually is the old Germanic word " Mark" for the Slavic loanword border continues to be used, see also " Mountian " or " district "). According to another interpretation can be called " Jusenberg " in conjunction with the name of this mountain on the south adjoining district of the municipality of Dettingen / Erms bring: there is, the name "John Berg". " Klaus" can be derived from " Klause ", ie seat of a hermit, or of Nicholas. But there is neither archaeological nor written evidence of this. So must remain in the realm of speculation, the origin of the name außergewöhnlichens " Jusi " or " Jusenberg ".

Geology

The eroded Jusi of today is one of the approximately 350 volcanoes of the Bad - Urach volcanic area ( Swabian Volcano), a tectonic appearance of the Miocene ( geological unit; tectonically very active about 17 million years ago ). It consists of concentric stored Schichttuff with Jurassic blocks. In places, large contiguous Schichtpakate from Jurassic rocks are open to today's land surface of the former chimney filling. In the north of the mountain also Bohnerztone can be found. At the time, made the volcanic vent is a bowl-shaped countersunk in the plateau of the Swabian Alb Maar. The distinctive dome of the Jusibergs arose as a result of erosive shift back of the Albtrauf.
