Justo Oscar Laguna

Justo Oscar Laguna ( born September 25, 1929 in Buenos Aires, † November 3, 2011 ) was an Argentine priest and Roman Catholic Bishop of Morón.

Life

Justo Oscar Laguna, son of Spanish parents, received on 18 September 1954, the ordination. He was pastor of the Cathedral of San Isidro, Buenos Aires, and later Spiritual Spiritual Director of the diocesan seminary and two decades rector of the seminary. In 1961 he became Chancellor in the Diocese of San Isidro; 1962 to 1980 he was Vicar General.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on February 1, 1975 Titular Bishop of Lares and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the diocese of San Isidro. The Bishop of San Isidro Antonio María Aguirre donated to him on March 8th the same year, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Alberto Devoto, Bishop of Goya and Manuel Tato, Bishop of Santiago del Estero. His episcopal motto was " Verbo Tuo laxabo rete ".

On January 22, 1980, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop of Morón and introduced into the office on 22 March of the same year.

On 30 November 2004, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related; however he was Apostolic Administrator of Morón until the appointment of his successor, Luis Guillermo Eichhorn. He died of a heart operation and was buried in the Cathedral of Morón.

He was for several years President of the Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Social and president of the Theological Commission (now Faith and Culture ) and Chairman of the Commission for Ecumenism of the Argentine Episcopal Conference.

Work

Justo Oscar Laguna was considered one of the important personalities of the Argentine church of the last 30 years. He sought dialogue and engaged in the social field in Argentina. During the military governments of Jorge Rafael Videla, Roberto Eduardo Viola and Carlos Alberto Lacoste and Leopoldo Galtieri, he prepared a draft for the restoration of the constitutional powers on behalf of the Bishops' Conference. He was a member of the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights. After the Falklands War in 1982, he called on the people of Argentina to peace and democracy in a speech to the Servicio Nacional de la Reconciliación. With Raúl Alfonsín he formed a lifelong friendship; he gave him to his death on 31 March 2009, the anointing of the sick. Although he was considered a moderator bishop, but was a critic of the presidency of Carlos Menem.

Laguna was committed to the unity of Christians and led a deep dialogue with the scholars and rabbis of Buenos Aires, Mario Rojzman. Together they led pilgrimages to Jerusalem by. Following a meeting with Pope John Paul II, he co-wrote with Mario Rojzman the book " Todos los caminos conducen a Jerusalén (y también a Roma )" ( dt: All Roads Lead to Jerusalem ( and Rome) ).
