History

To the Kaasgrabenkirche It is framed by the legend that a young woman may have been startled with her child in search of berries by Turkish soldiers during the Second Siege of Vienna in 1683 and is said to have hidden behind an elderberry bush. When the soldiers went about the footprints, they saw in the bush the nesting swallows and went away from that no man could hide behind it. Then returned to the Turks and the woman donated for Mary's help a shrine, the "Swallow Mother of God ", but for which there is no evidence.

The site of the present church was among the sand pits in Kaasgraben in the 19th century in the possession of the Grand wagon owner Kothbauer. He also had a home to small Sperl in St. Ulrich (now in the 7th district of Neubau ), in whose courtyard was a nearly life-size, much venerated statue of the Pietà. When the house was demolished Kothbauers, he transferred this statue at the site of the present church and built according to the legend in 1883 on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the miraculous salvation also a small chapel. In addition Kothbauer ran a wine tavern and it soon came devotional objects and musicians who played in the restaurant. Kothbauer ultimately had also set up swings and shooting, so the "Swallow Chapel " soon became famous and was considered a " chapel with Heurigenschank ". Due to the business acumen Kothbauers is also believed that he invented the legend himself and then spread through newspapers. After the success of " wine taverns chapel " was so great, many of the Grinzinger and Sieveringer wine tavern owners have sought to protect their business. 1903 was therefore the " pious " operation closed.

Then the Wiener department store operator Stefan Esders bought the property and demolished the chapel. On adjacent land he built a villa and the park for his family and donated the money for the building of a proper pilgrimage church. This was built in 1909-1910 on the site of the chapel by the architect Gustav and Franz Kupka Orglmeister.
