Sisi Chapel

The Sis ( s ) i- Chapel is a mountain at the Pfaff ( Vienna Woods ), this chapel in the district Sievering ( Döbling ) near the Gspöttgraben to about 360 m above sea level.

History

The neo-Gothic Sisi chapel was built in honor of the marriage of the Emperor and Empress Elisabeth and Franz Joseph I. of April 24, 1854 in Vienna. Johann Carl Freiherr von Sothen commissioned this, the architect Johann sheaves with the planning of the chapel in the sky, an area of the Vienna Woods in Sievering. In addition to the memory of the historical event, the chapel should also serve as a future grave site for the client and his wife Franziska. In 1854 to 1856, the chapel was eventually built according to plans drawn up by sheaves, which by Sothen so the city architect Josef Kastan commissioned. After the completion of this chapel was finally dedicated to the patron saints of the imperial couple, Saint Elizabeth, Saint Francis of Assisi and St. Joseph, on 31 July 1856.

During World War II, the chapel was badly damaged and then left to decay. For fear of acts of vandalism the altarpiece was dismantled. In 1997, the Board of Trustees Forest acquired a large part of the area " in the sky ", bought in 2002 at the chapel to 3,500 euros from Caritas and finally initiated its renovation as part of the overall revitalization of the area ( Tree of Life Circle, Vineyard, children 's playground, café - restaurant " octagon " ). The multi-year work, which cost a total of 1.1 million euros and were partially funded by the Vienna's historic preservation fund, were completed in 2005.
