Kabardino-Balkar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic

The Kabardino- Balkar ASSR (Russian Кабардино - Балкарская АССР; Kabardino- Balkar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic ( RSFSR ) within the Soviet Union. Capital was Nalchik. The 12,500 -square-mile region located on the north side of the Caucasus. It is inhabited by about 900,000 people. Coal, iron, tungsten and lead are mined. 1919, the area became an autonomous Soviet republic in the Soviet Union. In April 1944, the Balkar were accused by the Soviet authorities of collaborating with the Germans. The Kabardino- Balkar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was renamed in Kabardian ASSR. With the rehabilitation of the Balkar 1957, the old name came into use again. Since 1991, the Republic of Kabardino -Balkaria is part of Russia.
