The Kakwa River is a left tributary of the Smoky River in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.

The Kakwa River has its origin in the Kakwa Lake north of McBride in the Canadian Rockies in British Columbia. The surrounding area is located in Kakwa Provincial Park and Protected Area. The river flows in a north-easterly direction to the north at 2295 m high mountain pass Kakwa across the border into Alberta. The 30 m high Kakwa Falls overcomes the Kakwa River at ( ⊙ 54.10913-119.9235 ). He then it goes through the Kakwa Wildlands Park, then flows to the east and northeast by the hills foothills. It is crossed by the Alberta Highway 40 ( Bighorn Highway ) before it finally empties into the Smoky River.

The river was originally called Porcupine River ( porcupine English for " porcupine " ) and was later renamed after the same significant Cree word Kakwa.

The Kakwa River is used by kayakers and canoeists to water sports. Angler catch in the river bull trout.
