Kalman Kahana

Kalman Kahana (Hebrew קלמן כהנא, born May 31, 1910 in Brody, † August 20, 1991 ) was an Israeli politician, Vice - Minister and journalist, and signer of the Israeli Declaration of Independence. He was the brother of Yitzhak Kahan, former judge and President of the Supreme Court.

Kahana studied philosophy, Semitic studies, history and education at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at the Julius- Maximilians- University of Würzburg, where he earned a PhD in philosophy. He received his semicha as a rabbi at the rabbinical seminary for Orthodox Judaism in Berlin, which is also called by Esriel Hildesheim Hildesheim rabbinical seminary. In addition, he was also director of the city student organization of Jahadut Charedit (Hebrew יַהֲדוּת חֲרֵדִית ) and a member of the youth movement of the Aguda.

1938 Kahana emigrated to Palestine, where he located in Kibbutz Chafetz Chaim (Hebrew חָפֵץ חַיִּים, lit. Desire in life ) settled in Shephelah. He was editor of the newspaper Scha'arim.

As a member of the Knesset Poale Agudat Jisra'el Kahana was repeatedly appointed Deputy Minister of Education. This post he held from November 4, 1951 until August 15, 1955 and from 29 November 1961 to 22 November 1965 to 17 January 1966 to 15 December 1969.
