Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic

The Kalmyk ASSR (Russian Калмыцкая АССР; Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic ( RSFSR ) within the Soviet Union. The capital was Elista. The area is located between the Volga and Manytsch lowlands. The ASSR existed from 1935 to 1942 and from 1958 to 1991, previously from November 4, 1920 as Autonomous Oblast. 1942 Kalmykia was partially occupied by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured in December 1942 again by the Red Army. In 1943, the area of the central administration was assumed. The Kalmyk population was deported to the Asian part of the Soviet Union, renamed the capital in Stepnoi. After the rehabilitation of the Kalmyks, the city was named back in 1958 and the area again Autonomous Republic ( ASSR ). After the dissolution of the USSR, the Republic of Kalmykia kept the status of an autonomous republic within the Russian Federation.
