Kalonymus ben Meshullam

Kalonymos ben Meshullam († May 1096 in Mainz ) was a Jewish poet, scholar and rabbi, the son of Meshullam ben Kalonymos and to the persecution of the Jews of the year 1096 AD ( "Persecution of the Year 4856 " / Gezerot Tatnu ) chief rabbi of the Jewish community of Mainz.

Kalonymos ben Meshullam wrote on behalf of the Rhineland communities to the Supreme lord the Duke, Emperor Henry IV, who had hitherto protected the Jews, and asked him, unsuccessfully, to prevent the pogroms. He is in the story of Amnon of Mainz called, of which he is said to have received the text of the Pijjut Unetaneh tokef in a dream. He was murdered as part of the above mentioned Jewish pogrom on the report of the chronicler Solomon bar Simson in 1096.
