Kaniet Islands

Kaniet Islands or Kaniet ( Sae ) Islands, ( German outdated: Anachoreteninseln ) and Iles des Anachorettes is called a group of two nearby uninhabited atolls and islands in the region of the Western Islands of the Bismarck Archipelago.

Administratively, the islands belong to the province of Manus in Papua New Guinea, and in the Nigoherm Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area.

Geography

The group is located about 1,100 km north-east of Papua New Guinea's capital Port Moresby and 200 km north- west of the provincial capital of Manus. Composed of:

  • The Kaniet Atoll, with the main island Suf Iceland, the Motus Taling, Tatak and Vasan and several smaller Motus and

Previously, the islands were inhabited. The inhabitants of the islands spoke the now extinct Austronesian language Kaniet.
