Kapuvár

Kapuvar ( German Kobrunn ) is a city in Győr- Moson -Sopron in the small area Kapuvar in Hungary.

Geography

Kapuvar located in western Hungary on the Raab, 10 km south of the border to Austria, between Sopron (40 km) and Gyor (50 km).

History

In the area of Kapuvar there are traces of settlements dating from the Hallstatt period, from Illyrians, Romans and Avars. Kapuvar since the Conquest was the western gate of the Kingdom of Hungary. From the term " goal " and " Castle " ( Vár ) who also wrote the name of the place. The first written mention dates from 1162nd King Sigismund gave 1387 Place of Kanizsai family as thanks for their support. In 1532 he came by marriage into the possession of Nádasdy. 1558 was the place market rights, the castle was strengthened due to the Turkish threat to the border fortress. Nevertheless, the place fell together with the castle in 1594 for a short time in the hands of the Ottomans.

Since Ferenc Nádasdy was executed as a participant at the tycoon conspiracy against Emperor Leopold I, the place in 1681 went to the Habsburg loyal Esterházy. In Kuruzenkrieg early 18th century the castle was destroyed by the rebels, then rebuilt by the Esterházy family to the castle. But this was always in the shadow of the nearby Esterházy Palace in Fertőd. Middle of the 19th century recognized the economic boom as a result of industrialization also Kapuvar. There numerous representative buildings were erected in the center.

1901 had the greater community of 6642 inhabitants. In 1969 the place again the municipal law.

Kapuvar is on the main road No. 85 ( Lake Balaton ), and on the Raab - Sopron - Ebenfurter railroad.
