Karamenderes River

Called the Scamander ( Turkish Küçükmenderes Çayı, Greek Σκάμανδρος ), also Karamenderes or Scamander, is a river in Asia Minor Troad ( Menderes Su ). It rises in the Ida Mountains and flows north of Kumkale in the Dardanelles. On its bank lies the archaeological site of Troy and a little closer to the mouth of the prehistoric settlement mounds Kumtepe.

In Homer's Iliad is the river Scamander name among the people of the gods he is called Xanthos. In Greek mythology, he is personified by the river of the same God. This is a son of Oceanus and Tethys. As a father of Teucer and the Strymo he is the ancestor of the Trojans.
