Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic

The Karelian ASSR ( Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, abbreviated Kassr ) was an autonomous Soviet republic in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic ( RSFSR ) within the Soviet Union. Capital was Petrozavodsk. In the 172,400 -square-kilometer area around 800,000 people. It is directly on the border with Finland. According to the Finnish independence in 1917, the remaining eastern Karelia in Russia was formed on 25 July 1923, the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic ( ASSR ). Beginning March 31, 1940, the former ASSR was as Karelian Bear SSR an independent union republic of the Soviet Union, because the Soviet Union annexed parts of Finland and they angliederte the ASSR.
