Karin MÃ¥nsdotter

Karin Månsdotter (* October 6th or November 6, 1550 in Uppland, † September 13, 1612 on the farm Liuksiala Kangasala ) was the wife of the Swedish king Erik XIV ( 1533-1577 ).

Early years

Karin Månsdotters parents were Måns Månsson and Ingrid Jakob yolk. The father was a soldier, and probably came from rather humble circumstances. Karin was first employed by Gert Cantor, who was engaged as a court musician in Stockholm. Orphaned early, she was at least since the beginning of 1565 was as a chambermaid at the court of Elizabeth Vasa, a daughter of Gustav I. Wasa, busy. At the age of fifteen years, Karin became the mistress of King Erik XIV

Queen

Already on July 13, 1567 were Karin and Erik - probably due to resistance among the nobility because of their lowly origins - secretly married by the Swedish Archbishop in Stockholm, which became known only in December 1567. A little later agreed to Reichrat a marriage. On July 4, 1568 married Karin Månsdotter and King Erik XIV officially. A day later, she was crowned Queen of Sweden. An uprising of the Swedish nobility and the capture of the King on September 29th of the same year, instigated by his brother John, Erik forced but shortly thereafter to abdicate.

Widow

After her husband's death in 1577 Karin Månsdotter lived but wealthy retired on the farm Liuksiala Kangasala in Finland. Popularly they remained popular. She is buried in the Cathedral of Turku today. For her grave chapel in the cathedral of the Finnish- Russian painter Wladmimir Swertschkow designed a stained glass window in 1867. Karin Månsdotter is the only Swedish queen who was buried in Finland.

Karin Månsdotter and Eric XIV had one daughter and three sons:

  • Henrik (* January 24, 1570, † 1574 )
  • Arnold ( * November 1, 1572, † 1573)

Afterlife

The romantic and tragic conception of love between Karin and Erik has inspired writers and filmmakers. 1942, the Finnish writer Mika Waltari wrote his novel Kaarina Maununtytär ( German Karin Magnus daughter, 1943 In 1954, the Swedish film Karin Månsdotter (directed. Alf Sjöberg ) in the cinemas.
