Karl Baedeker

Karl Baedeker ( born November 3, 1801 in Essen, † October 4, 1859 in Koblenz, contemporary spelling: Karl Baedeker ) was a German publisher and founder of the world-famous as an author and still laid Baedeker Guide.

Life

On July 1, 1827 Karl Baedeker opened in Koblenz, a publishing firm. Five years later he acquired there, the publisher of Franz Friedrich Röhling, who in 1828 published the first Rhine Guides Rhine trip from Mainz to Cologne, Manual Quick travelers of the professor and historian J. A. Klein. For the second edition revised and expanded in 1835 Karl Baedeker the Rhine journey, so you can speak with the appearance of the journey along the Rhine from Mainz to Cologne from the first Baedeker guide. The book was so successful that it was reprinted three times within just twelve years.

Baedeker revolutionized the travel literature in order to make the user independent of tourist guides. Its handy, bound in a distinctive red cover guides to destinations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and other European countries strengthened the reputation of the Baedeker guide as fact- rich, sophisticated travel companion. Baedeker placed special emphasis on clarity, accuracy and timeliness. All travel descriptions have been revised several times. The name Baedeker was in the 19th and early 20th century in the German-speaking countries a synonym for guide. Karl Baedeker is now considered one of the pioneers of mass tourism since the Baedeker Guide ( modeled after the Englishman John Murray ) traveling institutionalized as a form of entertainment as well as a valid part until today canon of itineraries and attractions specifications.

Baedeker worked incorruptible, sober and accurate. According to an anecdote we owe the colloquial term of the pea counter for fussy correctness a saying of one contemporaries Karl Baedeker. While climbing the Milan Cathedral of the Westphalian Baron Karl Friedrich Gisbert von Vincke Baedeker 1847 caught myself, are like this every 20 levels remained dry and put a pea from the west into your pocket. Multiplied by 20, the number of peas plus residual levels revealed the precise specification levels for the subsequent guide. Then the descent he made the cross-check. Just that he owes accuracy probably his perpetuation in Jacques Offenbach's operetta La vie parisienne ( Parisian life ), in which the reliability Baedeker is praised. In the English translation it says:

Baedeker's grave is located on the main cemetery of Koblenz.

Karl Baedeker's sons Ernst, Karl Junior and Fritz continued her father's work. Even now appear under the brand Baedeker travel guide published by Karl Baedeker, which now belongs to the publishing group MairDumont in Ostfildern near Stuttgart.
