Karl Friedrich Eichhorn

Karl Friedrich Eichhorn ( born November 20, 1781 Jena, † July 4, 1854 in Cologne ) was a German legal scholar and university teacher.

Life

He was born the son of a professor of Oriental Languages ​​, Johann Gottfried Eichhorn.

Eichhorn is deemed to be representative of the Germanic branch, with Friedrich Carl von Savigny, the founder of the historical school of German jurisprudence. With its German state and legal history, he laid the first source -oriented and written in the modern sense scientifically developed overall presentation of the history of German law before. From 1806 to 1811 he was a professor of law at the University of Frankfurt (Oder), from 1811 to 1816 at the Humboldt University in Berlin, from 1817 to 1829 at the University of Göttingen from 1832 to 1833 and again in Berlin. In Göttingen, where he taught alongside canon law also constitutional law and history, he had great success with the students; he had a tavern hall rent, for holding therein his lectures - the ' Pandektenscheune '. His nickname among the students ( Captain Markulf ) refers to the early medieval formulary of Markulf.

Between 1813 and 1814 he was a volunteer in the Napoleonic Wars. He joined the 4th Kurmark Landwehr Cuirassierregiment and was captain and squadron commander. Eichhorn participated among others in the battle of large berries, the Battle of Dennewitz and the Battle of Leipzig. From 1815 he published the magazine for historical jurisprudence. 1831 Eichhorn was Privy Councillor of Legation in the Prussian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later Obertribunalsrat. In 1838 he became Prussian State Council. 1843 and 1844 he was a member of the supreme censorship court.

1842, the Order Pour le Mérite, he was awarded for Sciences and Arts. He has also received in 1847 the Prussian Red Eagle Order. and in 1853 the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art.
