Karl Gottfried Konstantin Dehio

Karl Dehio (. * 27 Maijul / June 8 1851greg in Reval, now Tallinn, . † February 26, 1927 in Tartu, full name Karl Gottfried Konstantin Dehio ), real State Council, was an internist and professor of special pathology and clinic in Dorpat ( now Tartu ). He was the last Rector of the German University in Dorpat.

Life

He studied at the University of Dorpat from 1870-1876, received his doctorate in 1877 to half 1878 further studies held up in Vienna, was from 1879 to 1883 at the Children's Hospital physician of the Prince of Oldenburg in Petersburg. He was the personal physician of the 1881 Grand Duchess Catherine Mikhailovna Due to its popularity on the Tsar's court and accompanied this with their sons over Moscow and Kiev to Berlin. In 1884 he went back as a lecturer at the University of Dorpat, where he was after 1886 professor of special pathology and clinic. In 1918 he became rector of the university. He was also Vice- President of the Society in the fight against leprosy in Livonia. In 1926 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina.

Effect

In medicine, the " Dehiosche sign" in the diagnosis of heart disease today known worldwide. It states: "If the bradycardia resolves itself by subcutaneous injection of atropine, the cause is a Vagusreiz, otherwise is heart muscle weakness before ."

Dehio dedicated his life to the fight against leprosy in Russia and the Baltic States. With the help of the young Grand Duke Romanov, sons of Catherine Mikhailovna, and held by him charity events ( " leprosy - balls " ), he built throughout Russia leprosaria for the treatment of the sick. The fact that in 1918 the epidemic in Russia was extinguished, is owed to a large extent also its use.
