Karl Gottfried Ritter von Leitner

Karl Gottfried Ritter von Leitner ( * November 18, 1800 in Graz, † June 20, 1890 ) was an Austrian writer.

Leitner studied philosophy, history and law, then he worked as a school teacher in Cilli and Graz. From 1837 to 1854 he was secretary estates of the land. From 1858 to 1864 he was curator of the Joanneum.

The poems were set to music Leitner partly by Franz Schubert.

Life

Karl Gottfried Ritter von Leitner was a descendant of the 17th century, distinguished by the gallant noble family. His father, Rechnungsrat estates of the land was also literary works, died in 1805, his mother married for the second time in 1807. After his high school studies in Graz Leitner turned to the study of law and the Styrian history and held as early as 1824 and 1825 temporary teachers at the high schools Cilli and Graz. Respected local poets and scholars, such as John of Kalchberg and the Orientalist Joseph von Hammer- Purgstall, were carefully publications by Leitner's poems and short stories (from 1820) to the poetic talent of the author. Promoted by these persons, Leitner came into the service of the Styrian estates. He was second in 1835 and 1837 first corporative secretary and entered 1854 as such because of his failing health to retire.

After Leitner had married in 1846, died in his wife Karoline already in 1854 on a trip to Italy in Pisa. Archduke Johann of Austria appointed Leitner in 1858 one of the three curators of the company founded by the Archduke in Graz Landesmuseum Joanneum. To Leitner's friends and acquaintances were well-known poets such as Johann Gabriel Seidl, Anastasius Grün and Franz Grillparzer, as well as the musician and mystic Jakob Lorber, whose biography Leitner wrote about in 1884, and whose religious convictions he shared.
