Karl-Heinz Kämmerling

Karl -Heinz Kammerling ( born May 6, 1930 in Dessau, † June 14, 2012 in Hannover ) was a German piano teacher.

Life and work

Kämmerling studied in Leipzig with Anton and Hugo Steurer Rohden. Later, he taught as a professor of piano at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and at the Academy of Music and Drama Hannover and since 2004 as a visiting professor at the University of Music in Zagreb, Croatia.

Kämmerling was the founder and long-time President of the European Piano Teachers Association, Germany, co-editor of the journal " practicing and playing music " and board member of the International Academy of Music for Soloists, also a longtime member of the musicians Commission by DAAD and chairman of the musicians Commission of the German National Academic Foundation and a member of the Institute of Talent Research in of Music at the University of Paderborn. In 1979 he was co-founder of the "International Academy of Music for Soloists " ( IMAS ) and was its artistic director until 2010. He often participated in publications in the publishing bosses and Schott.

As one of the world's most renowned piano teachers Kämmerling conducted master classes in Europe, Asia and the USA. His students have received over 100 national and international prizes and awards at major piano competitions. 21 of its graduates are working as professors in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He was a juror at major international piano competitions, including the Leeds Competition, at the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Tel Aviv, while Anton Rubinstein Competition in Dresden and at competitions in Warsaw, Brussels, Moscow, Munich, Leipzig, Beijing, Hamamatsu, Salt Lake City. From Kämmerlings classes significant pianists such as Bernd Goetzke, Lars Vogt, Thomas Duis, Severin von Eckardstein or Alice Sara Ott emerged.

Kämmerling was a member of the jury of the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

Recognitions and Awards

Kämmerling awarded the art prize of Lower Saxony, in 1999 the Federal Order of Merit, First Class of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2000 and the Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria. In addition, he was since 2005 Honorary Member of the German Music Council.
