Karl Holdhaus

Karl Holdhaus ( born January 21, 1883 in Baden bei Wien, † 30 June 1975) was an Austrian zoologist.

Life

Holdhaus grew up in Carinthia. At the University of Vienna, he studied zoology and geology. Ibid he was in 1905, Dr. phil. doctorate. From 1905 to 1949 he worked at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. After Ludwig Ganglbauer died supervised Holdhaus there the coleopterologische collection. For their expansion he helped particularly by collections made in the Eastern Alps. From 1933 Holdhaus was director of the Zoological Department.

Holdhaus worked in the fields of geology, taxonomy, biogeography and Muesologie, but was especially Zoogeograph. He explored the Mediterranean countries, the European high mountains (especially the Alps and the Carpathians ), which caused by the ice ages of the Pleistocene distribution patterns of European flora, fauna continental and oceanic islands as well as the spread of the insects on earth.
