Karl Schefold

Karl Schefold ( born January 26, 1905 in Heilbronn, † 16 April 1999 in Basel ) was a German -Swiss classical archaeologist. Born and educated in Germany, he emigrated in 1935 forcibly in Switzerland, which became his home. He was interested in the religious content of ancient art, which he pointed out the spirit of a scientific tradition that was shaped by the poetic heritage of German classicism and the ideal of Stefan George.

Life

After visiting the Eberhard -Ludwigs -Gymnasium in Stuttgart, he began his studies of classical studies in Tübingen and Heidelberg. There he also met his future wife, Marianne know of the stones. Next he studied in Jena and received his doctorate in 1930 at the University of Marburg Kerch vases. As assistant and Fellow, he later worked mainly at the German Archaeological Institute in Rome and Athens and participated in the excavations of Larisa on the Hermus.

Alarmed by the development in Germany, he moved to his marriage on February 5, 1935, the same year in Basel, where he qualified in Classical Archaeology 1936. First, he was primarily responsible for the Near East and Early Christian Archaeology, took over after the death of Ernst cesspool in 1940, the representation of the full teaching area and has gradually acquired definitively in 1953, transferred the Chair. Numerous foreign vocations he refused and built by his research and the establishment of the antiques archeology museum in Basel. He died on 16 April 1999 in Basel.

Schefold was a member of the German, Austrian and American Archaeological Institute and the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the British. At the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, he was honorary doctorate. By Herbert A. Cahn he founded the Museum of Ancient Art Basel, the first museum of ancient art in Switzerland. He was also a co-founder in 1956 of the Association of Friends of ancient art and in 1958 the magazine Antiques.

He married Marianne of the stones, the daughter of Karl von den Steinen, a well-known anthropologist. With it, he often read texts of ancient Greek poets to a wide audience. From this marriage the sons of Dian Schefold, Reimar Schefold and Bertram Schefold come.

Work

Schefold is best known for his work on the late classical Attic vases, the art of the Scythians in southern Russia and his excavations in Larisa on the Hermus and Eretria. Since his time in Basel he held even in difficult times, the connection between Europe and America upright.

Upon completion of the five volumes of "Greek word pictures " ( Volume 1, 1st Edition, 1964, Volume 5, 1988, Volume 1, 2nd edition 1993) he worked in his last years, especially with the revamp and expansion of the book about " the portraits of the ancient poets, orators and thinkers " (1943, new edition 1997), a former writings summary and working end work," The religious content of ancient art and the revelation "(1998 ) and " Hugo von Hofmannsthal picture of Stefan George " ( 1998).

Were of great importance to his time working for the Roman wall painting, particularly to Pompeii, but are now considered obsolete. His 2003 under the title The seal posthumously published as a guide to Classical Art memoirs are more concerned with art as its own with Schefold life, and thus create more " structure and coherence " between the nearly 700 publications Schefold than they expectations of meet the entertaining value of memoirs.
