Reimar Schefold

Reimar Schefold ( * 1938 in Basel) is professor emeritus of Cultural Anthropology and Sociology of Indonesia at Leiden University. He is the son of the classical archaeologist Karl Schefold and grandson of the famous ethnologist Karl von den stones.

Different field research led him to the Indonesian Mentawai Islands. He spent several years with the people of the Sakuddei on the island of Siberut and studied their lives in the rainforest. He wrote a number of books, among others, about religious beliefs, traditional culture, songs and head hunting. Another focus is on traditional architecture.

He is Chairman of KITLV / Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies. His special interests are the thematic Symbolic anthropology, material culture and ethnicity. Reimar Schefold is the author and co-author of numerous books and lives with his family in Amsterdam. He also held the estate of his uncle Helmut from the stones.
