Karl von Scherzer

Karl von Scherzer ( born May 1, 1821 in Vienna, † February 19, 1903 Gorizia, Italy ) was an Austrian explorer and diplomat.

Life

Scherzer came from a well -to-do middle-class family and received a thorough education. His legal studies, he broke off to devote himself to typography. He soon established a typographic model institution. Already during his studies (1838-1842) larger travels took him to South Tyrol, Italy, Germany, France and England.

In 1848 he founded the " Gutenberg Association", a union to improve the situation of printing workers. He was a member of the Liberal Party and a friend of many leaders of the revolution. All this led him in 1851 even before a court martial. From 1852 to 1855 he led the German traveler and geographer Moritz Wagner by a research trip through North, Central and South America. When he returned in 1855 from his trip with great scientific yield to Vienna, he was again brought before a court-martial because of " unauthorized absence " of responsibility and sentenced to a fine of six weeks arrest, but in eight days house arrest was converted.

Between 1857 and 1859, the offenders involved at the instigation of the then Minister of Finance, and with appeal by Archduke Ferdinand Max, at the Novara expedition as an expedition writer and ( the captain Wüllerstorff minor ) Trade Commissioner. After his return, he was raised to knighthood and was appointed Ministerial Counsellor in the Ministry of Commerce, 1866. In 1869 he accompanied the Austrian expedition to East Asia, from 1872 to 1875 he was Consul General at Smyrna, 1875-1878, London, from 1878 to 1884 in Leipzig and from 1884 to 1896 in Genoa.

In 1896 he retired.

His patron Archduke Ferdinand Max, he warned as good connoisseur of the country before the Mexican adventure. By Alexander von Humboldt and Justus von Liebig, the publications of his trips were very much appreciated.
