Karl Zerbe

Karl Zerbe ( born September 16, 1903 in Berlin, † November 24, 1972 in Tallahassee, Florida ) was a German - American painter.

Life

Karl Zerbe was born in Berlin in 1903, in 1904 the family moved to France. Karl attended primary school in Paris. In 1914 they moved to Frankfurt am Main. Karl Zerbe studied chemistry in 1920 at the Technical University in Friedberg. From 1923 he studied painting at the Debschitz School in Munich with Josef Eberz.

In 1931 he founded, together with other painters exhibition community that became known as the Seven Munich painter. For the association included Albert Burkart, Franz Doll, Günther Grassmann, William Maxon, Otto Nückel and Walter Schulz- Matan, which first appeared publicly in 1931 with works in Munich's Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus. Through the power of the National Socialists but leave the artistic possibilities were systematically pruned. Their last public appearance took place in the summer of 1937.

Zerbe became famous in 1932 with his oil painting Autumn Garden ( Autumnal garden). This work was purchased by the National Gallery, Berlin. 1937 was designated by the Nazis as " degenerate art " and destroyed. In 1934 he left Germany. Zerbe had a Jewish background. From 1937 to 1955 Karl Zerbe was head of the department of painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 1939 he became a U.S. citizen. From 1955 on he was a professor at the University of Florida.
