Kārlis Bētiņš

Carl Behting ( Latvian Karlis Bētiņš; born October 27, 1867 in Bērzmuiža at Doblen, Courland Governorate, † March 28, 1943 in Riga) was a Baltic chess player, chess composer, and chess writer.

Chess players

Between 1896 and 1913 Behting spearheaded a series of telegraphic correspondence chess comparing the Riga Chess Society with other European chess clubs. In individual competition, he won the 4th tournament of the remote Petersburg magazine Schachmatny Schurnal among others both games against Emanuel Schiffer.

Chess composition

Behting composed chess problems and studies. Community work with his brother and chess composer Johann ( Janis ) are not known.

Theorist and publicist

Carl Behting made ​​a significant contribution to opening theory in the Latvian Gambit. He was one of the organizers of the Riga Chess Life and editor for various chess columns in newspapers, such as the feuilleton Supplement For home and family of the Daugava in Riga and the Riga newspaper Zeitung. From Issue 9 the Baltic Chess sheets were published by him in collaboration with Paul Kerkovius. 1931 to 1932 he was chairman of the Latvian Chess Federation and from 1931 to 1943 the Association of Latvian chess composers.
