Karmelitenkirche (Munich)

The former Carmelite church of St. Nicholas is the first Baroque church of Munich. Today it houses the Archives of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising and the library of the Metropolitan Chapter of Munich and an event hall.

Location

The Carmelite Church ( Carmelite Street 2) is located on Promenade Square in Munich's historic Old Quarter Cross.

History

After Elector Maximilian I in 1620 vowed to donate a votive church for a victory at the Battle of White Mountain, he left in 1654 to build the baroque church, designed by Hans Konrad Asper by Marx Schinnagl as a replacement for the old Carmelite. 1660, the church was consecrated.

Following the expansion of the boardwalk to the upper-class boulevard changed Nikolaus Schedel of Greiffenstein 1802-1811 the original façade of 1657th The Carmelite now received a strong classical character.

During World War II, the church was severely damaged and rebuilt 1955-1957 by Sepp reputation. However, have been reconstructed only the facade and the apse.
