Karol Estreicher (senior)

Karol Józef Teofil Estreicher (also Karl Ritter von Estreicher Rozbierski; Karl Josef von Estreicher; Karl Joseph Theofil of Estreicher; pseudonym J. Krupski; born November 22, 1827 in Krakow, † September 30, 1908 ) was a Polish philologist, bibliographer, librarian and translator and longtime director of the Krakow Jagiellonian library.

Life

Karol Estreicher came from the Krakow branch of the family of Estreicher. His parents were the botanist Alojzy Rafał Estreicher and Antonina born Rozbierska.

After leaving school in 1843 he studied until 1845 at the Cracow University of philology and then to 1848 law. After that he was in Krakow and then to 1862 in Lviv until 1855 court clerk. In 1862 he became a notary at the court in Wojnicz. In the same year he moved to Warsaw, where he Director of the Library of Warsaw University was Deputy ( instead of the closed University ) and in 1865 appointed to the chair of bibliography. 1867 earned the doctoral degree.

In 1868 he moved to Kraków, where he was until 1905 Director of the Jagiellonian University Library.

In 1872 he became a full member of the co-founders of the Polish Academy of scholarship ( PAU ). From 1870 to 1908 he was editor of the first 22 volumes of the " Bibliografia Polska ". This work translated his son Stanisław († 1939) and his grandson of the same Karol continued until 1951.

In 1881 he was by the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I, who was also the Grand Duke of Cracow, as applicable Karl Ritter von Estreicher Rozbierski to the peerage; In 1905 he granted him the title of an Austrian court counselor.

Karl Estreicher, who wrote about 700 treatises, translated in addition to his scientific work about 30 French, German, Italian and Spanish plays.
