Karol Kniaziewicz

Karol Kniaziewicz ( born May 4, 1762 Assiten, Kurland, † May 9, 1842 in Paris) was a Polish general.

Kniaziewicz occurred in 1778 in the artillery, and in 1792 for his gallant conduct in the battle of Dubienka (June 17 ) promoted to Major. After the battle of Golkow (8 July 1794) Kniaziewicz was appointed colonel, two months later a general. At the defense of Warsaw, he had a prominent part. In the battle of Maciejowice (October 10 ) Kniaziewicz commanded the left wing, but fell into captivity from which only freed him the throne of Tsar Pavel, 1796. In the Polish Legion he took in 1796 to the French operations against Rome and Naples in part. After the battle of Marengo, he formed the Rhine a new Polish Legion, which he commanded with distinction in the Battle of Hohenlinden. After the Peace of Luneville 1801 Kniaziewicz withdrew to his estates.

In 1812 he received the offer of Jérôme Bonaparte, enter the General Staff. A little later he was made a Commander of the 18th Division, and distinguished himself at Smolensk and Moscow River and at Wjasma. 1814 could be Kniaziewicz settled in Dresden.

When in 1822 the conspirators chose in the Polish uprisings Kniaziewicz to their leader, Russia demanded his extradition, which was refused. At the outbreak of the uprising of 1830 Kniaziewicz hurried to Paris to persuade France to assist Poland. There he remained.

Karol Kniaziewicz died on May 9, 1842 in Paris.
