Kasai-Oriental

Kasai - Oriental ( East Kasai German ) is a province of the Democratic Republic of Congo with about 6.108 million residents. Its capital is Mbuji -Mayi.

Geography

The province is located in the south and is bordered to the north by the provinces of Equateur and Orientale, Katanga to the south, on the west by Kasai - Occidental and on the east by Maniema.

History

The province was created in 1966 by merging the provinces Lomami, Sud- Kasai ( South Kasai ) and parts of the province Sankuru.

Planned, never implemented division

With the adoption of a new constitution in May 2005, the Congo and Kasai Oriental regrouped should thereby be divided into three new provinces:

  • Kasai Oriental, with its capital Mbuji -Mayi
  • Lomami with capital Cabinda
  • Sankuru with capital Lodja

After the appointment of the management change was previously postponed several times, President Joseph Kabila made ​​this completely reversed in January 2011. This will continue to exist in its current form Kasai - Oriental.
