Kasserine

Kasserine (Arabic القصرين, DMG al - Qaṣrain ) is a city in the center of Tunisia. It is the capital of the homonymous governorate of Kasserine and has about 80,000 inhabitants.

Geographical location

Kasserine is 14 kilometers from Jebel Chambi, the highest mountain 1544 meters Tunisia away. The city is regarded as a transportation hub, as it is situated very close to the oil field Douleb.

History

Near the city at Oued Derb the remains of the Kasserine dam, the largest Roman gravity dam in North Africa are.

The region around Kasserine was the scene of one of the most famous battles of the Africa campaign in World War II in February 1943. In this case (→ Battle of the Kasserinpass ) about 2000 German and 10,000 Allied soldiers died.

During the revolution in Tunisia 2010/2011, the city was the scene of particularly violent clashes between protesters and security forces, special units of the government killed dozens of people.
