Kasumkent

Kassumkent (Russian Касумкент, also Kasumkent; Lezgian Кьасумхуьр, Kasumchür ) is a village ( aul, officially Selo ) ( October 14, 2010 status ) in Dagestan with 13,232 inhabitants, predominantly lesgischer nationality.

Geography

Kassumkent located in southern Dagestan, 150 km air distance from the capital of the republic, Makhachkala and about 45 km from Derbent removed between the rivers Chirag - chai and Kurach at an altitude of about 480 m. The village is the administrative center of the Rajons Suleiman Stalski.

History

The village said to have been founded several hundred years ago by a mountain dwellers called Kassum ( Kasum ), which built his house in the wooded area at the Chirag - chai. Over time, more residents settled in the surrounding areas. According to a census in 1886 there were 116 houses in the village and 623 inhabitants (316 men and 307 women). At the beginning of the 20th century there were two mosques and a two-class school.

Was Kassumkent on July 3, 1929 an administrative center of a newly created Rajons. Today it is one of the largest rural Rajonzentren of the Republic.
