Semender

Semender (Russian Семендер ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Dagestan (Russia) with 13,677 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

Semender located 6 km from the shores of the Caspian Sea and about 8 kilometers to the west from the center of the city of Makhachkala. Southeast of the village rises steeply the massif Tarki - Tau with its highest point Mys Sarijar to 720 m above sea level.

The settlement is part of the urban district of the Dagestani capital Makhachkala and is managing the Rajons Kirowski, one of the three administrative districts of the city, assumed.

History

Semender emerged from the end of the 1980s as a residential suburb of the rapidly growing Makhachkala and received in 1999 the status of an urban-type settlement.

The name is derived from the medieval town Samandar (also semender ). This was on the 6th to 8th centuries the capital of the Chasarenreiches, before laying into the northerly Itil. The name in turn may be the settling of the in the area, the Avars related tribal alliance derived Sabender. The exact location of the old Samandar is unknown, but that a relevant place is the location, near the present-day semender Tarki on the east side of the Tarki - Tau, where ancient settlement remains have been found.

Infrastructure

West and south of semender passes the highway M29 ( also part of the European route 119), which runs along the northern edge of the Caucasus and the coast of the Caspian Sea in the direction of Azerbaijan, as well as their western feeder to the center of Makhachkala. With Makhachkala is the city bus and " Marschrutka " connection.
