Katay Don Sasorith

Kátay Don Sasōrit ( born July 12, 1904 in Pakse, † December 29, 1959 ) was a Laotian politician in the independence movement and minister in several cabinets until 1958.

Journey

Kátay Don Sasōrit was the son of a Vietnamese father and a Lao mother. He received his education in Hanoi, after which he resigned in 1926 in the service of the French colonial administration.

During the Second World War (1941-1945) he was with Nhouby Abhay and French support, the founder of the "Movement for National Renovation", represented the anti -Thai positions. In the organization of young intellectuals he received the support of Charles Rochet, the Vichy - loyal officials for the school system. They composed a national anthem, saluted the flag of Laos and published its own journal, the bilingual Lao Nyai.

As the movement collapsed after the Japanese on 9-10. March 1945 the Vichy - loyal French had imprisoned, he joined as many nationalist Lao Lao Issara the movement. In the government formed in October 1945, he served as Minister of Finance, a difficult task, since practically no funds were available. With others, he went into exile in Bangkok. On July 19, 1949, the Franco- Lao Treaty was signed, which should make Laos an independent member within the French Union. The exile government disbanded on 24 October 1949, he returned, as the other members, then in the homeland.

After independence, he was elected to the National Assembly in 1948 and then from 1951 to 1954 was Minister of Finance and Economy. In 1954 he became chairman, founded by Prince Suvanna Phūmā Progressive Party ( Phak Kaona ), in November, he then followed the Prince as premier after. Against the Pathet Lao, he took a hard line. Because of its failure to bring about national reconciliation, he was overthrown in March 1956.

In 1958, however, he was in the cabinet of Phoui Sananikone again Deputy Premier and Defence and Minister of the Interior. He died the following year of natural causes. One in his home town of Pakse built monument was removed after 1975, however, dominates the stupa containing his ashes continue to the entrance of the local Wat Luang.
