History

The Imperial University Keijo was founded by Japan in 1924 at the same location of the sub-province Keikidō as the sixth of the Imperial Universities of Japan Empire. The place was at that time the main administrative center of the Japanese province Chosen, which extended over the entire Korean Peninsula.

After the end of World War II, the province of Japan became independent. This was accompanied by the change of the local national language from Japanese to Korean. As a result, the kanji were, what the name of the Imperial University Keijōs formed (京城 帝国 大学), now used with their Korean pronunciation and the term " imperial " was omitted: From Keijo Teikoku Daigaku was Kyongsong Taehak (German University Kyongsong ). With independence, it was also the first university in the nascent South Korea.

The university was closed on August 22, 1946 by Regulation No 102 of there now established U.S. military government. At the same time, the university was merged with nine other colleges to Seoul National University.
