Keith Brown (pole vaulter)

Keith Brown ( born June 15, 1913July 15, 1991 in Delmar, California ) was an American athlete who was successful in the early 1930s as a pole vaulter.

He jumped two world records:

  • Junior WR with 4.21 m on June 18, 1932 in Cambridge
  • WR with 4.39 m on June 1, 1935 in Boston. Brown thus improved the three -year-old record of his compatriot William Graber by 2 cm. Already in the following year, 1936, he lost the world record at George Varoff who jumped 4.43 m.

He won several times a championship title, which he had but always share with at least one other athletes. Only in 1935, when he jumped 4.39 meters world record, he became sole master.

At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin Keith Brown did not participate. At a height of 1.88 m his competition weight was 73 kg.

Brown graduated from the University of Yale. Subsequently, he worked for Procter & Gamble Company in Chicago before he worked as an operator of a cattle ranch near Phoenix. He died aged 78 of emphysema.

He was married to Mary Lou. The marriage produced two daughters (Julia and Katherine ) and two sons ( Keith and Steve ) were born.
