Kendel

BW

The ( rarely also of ) Kendel, sometimes called to distinguish it from other Kendeln also Hommersumer Kendel, is a stream that arises in Weeze and opens into the Nier after about 25 kilometers at Goch - Hommersum.

Geology

The Kendel follows almost along their entire length, about five meander loops, a silted Altstromrinne of the Ur - Rhine ( the Lower Rhine commonly called " Kendel "), which winds with very low gradient across the Lower Rhine lowlands. This channel is already evident from Krefeld and known in its southern section as Niep ( - Kuhlen ).

Course

The Kendel branches west from Weeze at the Otter ditch. From Weeze pulls the Kendel, approximately parallel to the German -Dutch border on the west side and the Nier and the A57 on the east side, to the Goch districts Hülm, Gaesdonck and Hassum over until after Hommersum.

On the last 700 meters north of Hommersum to its confluence with the Nier Kendel the border river between Germany ( North Rhine- Westphalia ) and the Netherlands ( Limburg Gennep with the village - Ottersum ). On this piece, there is still a bridge over the Kendel, which is the border crossing at the same time. Previously there was also a railway bridge in the Boxteler web; this bridge was, however, blown up in the final stages of World War II as part of Operation Market Garden on 18 September 1944, German troops.

The last part in Hommersum, at the above-mentioned railway bridge until 1946/47, was a water mill in operation, the Isshöveler mill ( Ndl IJsheuvelmolen ) or Kendelmühle was called.
