Keng Tung

State

Keng Tung ( Burmese: က ္ ယုိင္း တုံမ္ ရုိ့; MLCT: kyuing: mrui tum), also called Cheingtung, Chiang Tung, Kyaingtong and Kengtong, is a town in Shan State in eastern Myanmar.

History

Keng Tung was founded in the late thirteenth century by the grandson of King Meng Rai, this came from the dynasty of Chiang Mai. It was part of the Kingdom of Lan Na. For this reason, the ethnic composition is slightly different than in the rest of the Shan State.

During the Second World War Keng Tung was a central objective of military intervention by the Thai army took the city on 27 May 1942 and their headquarters einrichtete here. At the end of the war, troops from Shan State moved away again.

The Palace of the Saopha ( princes ) of Keng Tung, a colonial-style building was built in 1905 by Kawng Intaleng Kiao, and destroyed by the military regime in 1991.

Geography and climate

The town of Keng Tung is located at the southern end of the valley about 19 km long and has an average of 11 km wide. There is a walled city with a moat with a length of eight kilometers. In the dry season many people from the area and numerous caravans from China to the market in the city. The plane is at an altitude of 910 m above sea level.

Economy

There are minerals that have hardly been mined. In most streams gold is washed. Teak forests are in Mong Pu and Mong Hsat, they are beaten by public procurement. A third of the price from the sale of the logs goes to Mawlamyaing, as the government receives royalties. There are teak forests in the Mekong - the catchment area in the south of the state, but there are only a local market for this wood. It is also cultivated rice, sugar cane, EAI -th- nuts, tobacco, cotton, poppy seeds, and tea. In addition, the livestock industry is of great importance. There is a university.
