Kenmu Restoration

The Kemmu restoration (Japanese建武 の 新政Kenmu no Shinsei; 1333-1336 ) is a short interim period of Japanese history in the transition from the Kamakura period to the Muromachi period. It represents the attempt of the Emperor Go - Daigo to bring the imperial court in Kyoto back to power, which was reduced to a purely ceremonial function. The Minamoto family inherited since the year 1192 the title Seii Taishogun (short Shōgun ) in their ranks and ruled Japan from the Kamakura Bakufu.

Emperor Go - Daigo began in 1333 the previous Shogun off and made his own son, Prince Moriyoshi (also known as Prince Morinaga ) for Shogun, and gave him so that the command of the military. However, the Ashikaga Takauji Samurai (1305-1358) rebelled against Prince Moriyoshi and deposed him. Prince Moriyoshi was killed in 1335 by Takauji Ashikaga Tadayoshi Ashikagas younger brother. The attempt at restoration of the Emperor Go - Daigo failed 1336 final, and the imperial court was split into the North and the South Dynasty. The conflict lasted until 1392, when the dynasty was united under the leadership of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu.

By the end of the Edo period, the Tennō remained powerless.
