History

In documents from the 12th century on the location Goderac is mentioned, named after the local Slavic deity. By the Schwerin Bishop Berno the place name was changed to Godehard village. This designation was confirmed in a deed dated September 9, 1171 in Schwerin by Duke Henry the Lion. Later, the city got its present name after the prince's castle Kessin that lay nearby. The name of the castle Kizun was already called 1121. It was said that she was " more famous and richer in resources than any other ." By the year 1211 the bishop Brunward was awarded part of the castle district Kessin, sometimes only the village Goderac and a neighboring village in Schwerin. 1219 presented Prince Henry I. Borwin the church Kessin with the village Roggentin under the patronage of the monastery Sonnenkamp ( New Monastery ). Prince Nicholas, the then Lord of Rostock, had elevations from the village Goderac in favor of the monastery of Doberan. In 1269 the choir of the present church was completed and probably the Holy Godehard of Hildesheim consecrated because of the name similarity to Goderac.

From 1305 to 1350 the Rostock family Quast was the owner of Kessin and several neighboring villages. This then sold their property to the family Kropelin that soon after Roggentin acquired. As in 1496, the last family member died, Kessin came to Rostock family Kerkhof part. Soon after Kessin belonged to the citizens goods that have been confiscated by the Dukes and Magnus Balthasar, due to their feud with the city of Rostock and only returned in 1528 by Duke Henry V against a payment of 1600 florins. In the course of the following century next Kerkhofs other Rostock families acted as owners of farms in Kessin. 1601 bought the Rostock Mayor Friedrichshein the Kerkhofschen goods Bartelsdorf, Kessin, Harmstorf and Bentwisch. These had been pledged to him since 1598. Since then Kessin belonged to Bartelstorf.

From 1620 to 1684 the city of Rostock was the owner of these goods. From 1684 possession of the monastery Ribnitz Bartelstorf and thus Kessin. After a lengthy process Kessin was bought back on December 18, 1781 by the city of Rostock. Since that time Kessin again belonged to the estates of the city of Rostock. Logs from the late 18th century attest to the fact that many people were still living at that time in Kessin as serfs.
