Zayandeh

The Khaju Bridge (Persian پل خواجو, pol -e chādschu ) is one of the most famous bridges in the Iranian city of Isfahan and one of its landmarks.

History

The Khaju bridge was built around 1650 on the orders of Shah Abbas Safavid II on the foundations of an older bridge. According to the inscription the bridge was repaired in 1873. It has been described by many travelers, among others Kaempffer.

George Curzon called the Bridge 1892 " the most handsome bridge in the world ".

Construction

The bridge crosses the Zayandeh and connects two parts of the city of Isfahan. It has two floors and has 23 brick arches. It is 128.7 meters long and 11.7 meters wide. Attached to the arches sluice gates can be closed when necessary to impound the waters of the Zayandeh before the bridge. Thus, the numerous irrigation upstream from the bridge situated gardens, such as the Sa ʿ ādatātābād, " the garden of happiness " be ensured when the Zayandeh leads to little water.

The lower part of the bridge is popular pedestrian- with its on the downstream side leading to the water levels as a residence. In the middle of the bridge there is also an octagonal configuration with viewing platforms. The bridge is just as locked as the Si -o- se Pol bridge for motor vehicles.
