The Khan - Khentii Protected Area is a protected area in northern Mongolia to the Russian border, which is one of the specially protected areas of Mongolia. In the south, adjacent to the reserve of Gorchi - Tereldsch National Park, which is in turn directly north of Ulan Bator. The reserve was established in 1992 and protects an area of ​​about 13,000 square kilometers. 70 % of which are covered with forests. Mountains like the Khentii Mountains contribute to the scenic diversity of the area. Thus, it hosts a number of large mammals, such as Maralhirsche, deer, musk deer, wild boar and ibex. At the headwaters of the Onon, which rises in the reserve, the Mongol ruler Genghis Khan to have been born.
