Kharan (Pakistan)

Kharan ( Urdu: خاران ) is a town in the same district Kharan in southwestern Pakistan in the region of Balochistan.

Kharan is at a distance of 10 km from the river Baddo in a desert region. Long Kharan was a caravan station. Today is traded with salt, millet, wheat, dates, melons, rugs and baskets. There are irrigation. Domestic animals are camels, goats and sheep. In the north- east of the city of Kharan Airport ( ICAO: OPKN ) and are the Kharan East Airport (also Khuzdar Airport, ICAO: OPKH, IATA: KDD ).

Situated at an altitude of 693 m city had after a count in 1998 26,057 inhabitants, of which 13,623 men and 12,434 women; according to a 2006 estimate there were 31,542.

After capture by the British, the city was a principality whose ruler Mir Nawab or were called. The Principality existed until 1955.

In the desert Kharan took place an underground nuclear test on May 30, 1998.

On 18 January 2011, the city and the region were affected by an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale.
