Khojaly District
Khojaly is a rayon in the west of Azerbaijan. The capital of the district is the town of Khojaly. Khojaly is located in the disputed territory of Nagorno Karabakh, in the internationally unrecognized Republic of Nagorno Karabakh, in which it is part of the province Askeran since February 1992. In the same year the massacre of Khojaly was held.
Geography
The district has an area of 922 km ². It is located in the mountainous Nagorno-Karabakh.
Population
The rayon had 25,800 inhabitants in 2009 according to Azerbaijani information. These are spread over 57 settlements.
Economy
The region is dominated by agriculture. It is mainly cereals, wine, and vegetables are grown and operated livestock. Prior to 1992 there was a factory for building materials, wineries and breweries.
Culture
Near Xocalı is an ancient necropolis.
