Askeran Province

Askeran ( Ասկերան Armenian, Russian Аскеран ) is a province of the de facto Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. It lies in the center of the country, surrounding the capital Stepanakert. The province has an area of 1,222 km ² and in 2005 had 16,979 inhabitants. The population density is 13.9 persons per square kilometer. Capital is the same Askeran.

The province corresponds to the Azerbaijani Khojaly district, as well as their parts of the district of Agdam have been affiliated, including the current ghost town of Agdam. The area is controlled by the Armenian army and is claimed by Azerbaijan.
