Martakert Province

Martakert ( Մարտակերտ Armenian, Russian Мардакерт, Mardakert ) is a province in the north of the de facto independent Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, which is officially part of Azerbaijan. Administrative headquarters are Martakert ( Mardakert ).

The province comprises the north of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region.

After the abolition of the autonomy of Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region on 26 November 1991 the Azerbaijani government ordered the area to the Rajons Kəlbəcər and Tərtər. From July 1992 to July 1993, the area was in Azerbaijani hand has since been occupied mostly by Armenian troops. The rayon Kəlbəcər also includes areas outside the former autonomous region, which are now under Armenian control and form the province Schahumjan. The eastern part of the range defined by the Nagorno-Karabakh as a province Martakert region is again under Azerbaijani control and is managed by the immediate east of this town Tərtər from. To the north lies the Azerbaijani rayon Goranboy, of the Nagorno-Karabakh claimed parts of the province Schahumjan.

In the province of the Sarsang Reservoir and the Armenian monasteries Gandsassar ( Գանձասար, Gandzasar ) Jeritz Mankanz ( Երից Մանկանց Վանք, Yerits Mankants ) and Jegische Arakjal are ( Եղիշէ Առաքեալի վանք, Yeghishe Arakyal ).
