Kibuye

Kibuye is a city in the west of Rwanda and a well-known seaside resort in the country. The city is located about 60 kilometers west of Kigali, on Lake Kivu in western province. Kibuye has about 46,500 inhabitants.

Kibuye is on a very rugged coastline on the eastern edge of the Kiwusees, about half the distance between Cyangugu and Gisenyi. The town itself is somewhat increased, but the numerous fishermen have their homes mostly down the coast. Since the area of reform of 1 January 2006, the city is part of the Western Province and is the administrative center of the district of Kibuye. Western province was formed in 2006 from the merger of the province of Gisenyi, Cyangugu province, parts of Ruhengeri and Kibuye province, whose capital Kibuye had been previously. Before the genocide, there were 250,000 Tutsis in Kibuye province, only 8,000 survived the massacre.

In the city there is a Genocide Memorial, commemorating the genocide in Rwanda. Near the town is also the Ndaba waterfall. A run-down and closed since 2005 holiday resort with bungalows should attract tourists.
