The Kilmes (Russian Кильмезь ) is a left tributary of Vyatka in the European part of Russia. With 270 km long with a catchment area of 17,200 km ² it is the second largest tributary of the Vyatka.

Course

The Kilmes rises in the northern Republic of Udmurtia in the Kamahöhen. From there, it flows first in mainly south through the densely forested, hilly northern center of Udmurtia.

After the confluence of Arlet it turns to the west and southwest. It meanders through the marshy area and takes numerous streams and creeks on. Approximately 50 northeast of Kilmes bends the Kilmes off to the south, just before the village, she turns again to the west. Below Kilmes the river crosses the border with the Kirov Oblast.

In the Kirov Oblast the Kilmes continues to flow very winding towards the west. It forms numerous oxbow lakes and finally reached at Ust- Kilmes the Vyatka.

Use

The Kilmes is average by the beginning of November frozen until the second half of April. The river is used by boat hikers. The river is deep at its middle reaches 10-60 m, on the border of Udmurtia and the Kirov Oblast up to 75 m wide, between 0.5 and 3 m and runs at an up to 3 km wide valley. The Kilmes is mainly fed by meltwater.
