Life

Kim Chong -gil ( His real name is Kim Ch'i- gyu [ 김치규 | 金致逵] ) was born on 5 November 1926 in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk -do. He received his degree in English at the Korea University and then studied English Literature at the University of Sheffield in England. He served as chairman of the Korean poet Association and taught as a professor at Korea University. 1947 he had his official debut when his poem door ( 문 ) was awarded a literary prize. Since then he has been active both as a poet and as a critic.

Kim is generally regarded in the Korean literary world as one of the greatest poets of the modern age. His poetry is mainly characterized by clarity and transparency and by its skillful exploration of the power of poetic representation. The idea of representation has an almost metaphysical value, he argues, both poet and reader also enables it to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of truth for the poet. His lyrical methodology can therefore be only fully understood when considered in connection with his attitude towards life and his creative genius.

Kim's works contain both ideas that have been promulgated by imagism - a lyrical direction of modernity, which was represented by poets such as Amy Lowell, HD and Ezra Pound - and the traditional style of Hansi and the spirit of Seonbi. But unlike other poets of Imagism, his works exude a classic and traditional elegance, which gives a certain touch of decency and integrity in return his works. This traditional elegance is best seen in the emotional restraint of the poet and his detachment from the external world. In addition, Kim also focuses on the virtue of modesty to convey through the grief and suffering.
