History

The origin of the name is unclear Breifne. You should hilly mean and describe the geography of the area. Another origin of the name could be from mac Brefne, daughter of Beoan Bethaig. In the 12th century, under the reign of Ua Ruairc Tigernán ( Tiernan O'Rourke ) filed Breifne of Kells in County Meath to Drumcliff, County Sligo. 1256 resulted in a battle between O'Rourke and O'Reilly ( Uí Raghallaigh ) near the town of Ballinamore to the separation of the kingdom in East Breifne and West Breifne. The O'Reilly became masters of East Breifne ( Breifne Ó Raghallaigh ), which mainly comprises the present-day County Cavan, O'Rourke ruled over the West Breifne ( Ua Ruairc of Breifne ), today Leitrim. This lasted until the Begin of the 17th century.
