Kington (Herefordshire)

Kington is a market town and civil parish in Herefordshire, England. In the census of 2001 Kington had 2597 inhabitants.

Kington is on the border of England with Wales, and although it is located west of Offa 's Dyke, it belongs for more than a thousand years to England. The community lieth in the shadow of Hergest Ridge at Arrow, 34 kilometers north- west of Hereford. Towns nearby are Prestaigne, Builth Wells, Knighton and Leominster.

History

In the 8th century Kington probably belonged to Wales, mid-11th century, but then as deserted village under the jurisdiction of the Anglo-Saxons. With the fall of Roger de Breteuil, 2nd Earl of Hereford in 1075 Kington came to the crown. 1203 William de Braose bought, 4th Lord of Bramber Kington. A castle in the city was probably destroyed in 1216 and then abandoned.
